Post-K project: Priority Issue 06 - Accelerated development of innovative clean energy systems (Dec. 2014-)

Any source of energy that is superior in all aspects?cost, environmental impact, safety, and use of natural resources?does not exist. Therefore we need to develop a number of multiple revolutionary clean energy systems. Using the post-K computer, we will develop a method to conduct many simulations to assess various large-scale phenomena energy systems. These simulations will accelerate development of carbon-free coal gasification plants, low-cost, long-lasting fuel cells, large-scale wind power plants farm floating on the sea seashore, and nuclear fusion power plants.

HDDMPPS Project (Sep. 2011-)

(Development of a Numerical Library based on Hierarchical Domain Decomposition for Post Petascale Simulation)

We have been developing an open source system software, ADVENTURE, which is a general-purpose parallel finite element analysis system and can simulate a large scale analysis model with supercomputer like the Earth Simulator or K-computer. In the system, HDDM (hierarchical domain decomposition method), which is a very effective technique to large-scale analysis, was developed. The aim of this project is to develop a numerical library based on HDDM that is extended to pre and post processing parts, including mesh generation and visualization of large scale data, for the Post Petascale simulation.

ADVENTURE_ITBL Project (June 2002-)

Six national research institutes including Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute have been participating in the ITBL (Information Technology Based Laboratory) project, which aims at connecting geographically distributed supercomputers. This project is constructing a kind of virtual parallel computing environment that becomes a virtual laboratory. The ADVENTURE project has been conducting a collaborative research project of the ITBL with the JAERI since June 2002. Here the ADVENTURE system is implemented in the ITBL environment as community software and used to perform large-scale and complex structural and coupled analyses. In Nov. 2003, the ADVENTURE laboratory, which is one of virtual laboratories in the ITBL environment has started to perform various ADVENTURE-related research.


The Earth Simulator Project (Dec. 2002-)

(Development of the Next-generation Computational Solid Mechanics Simulator for a Virtual Demonstration Test)

The Earth Simulator (ES) is a massively parallel vector computer system of distributed memory type, and consists of 640 processing nodes (PNs) connected by 640 x 640 single-stage crossbar switches. Each PN has a SMP system with 8 vector-type processing elements (PEs). The ES as a whole consists of 5,120 PEs with 10 TB main memory, and its theoretical performance is 40 TFLOPS. The ADVENTURE project has been permitted to run on the ES since Dec. 2002. The solid analysis module named ADVENTURE_Solid is implemented on the Earth Simulator, and succeeded in solving an elastostatic analysis of a nuclear pressure vessel model with 100 million DOFs in 8.5 minutes at 5.1TFLOPS, which is 31.8% of the peak performance and over 80% parallel efficiency.

Earth Simulator :

Development of Frontier Simulation Software for Industrial Science (April 2002-)

The aim of this project is to develop "frontier simulation software" based on the excellent fundamental research within academic, industry and governmental circles. It aims to increase the technological level of computational engineering through innovation and development. A large structural analysis system is being developed with the goal of solving challenging complex problems in mechanics. The ADVENTURE system provides the foundation of the finite element based modules as well as the system integration technology for the FSIS project.


ADVENTURE-SAFE Laboratory (July 1999-)

In April 1999, the ADVENTURE project and the Safety and Structural Integrity Research Center (SAFE) in Sungkyunkwan University in Korea agreed to cooperate for the development of a virtual nuclear plant. Since then, two researchers from the SAFE lab have visited the University of Tokyo as visiting researchers every year, while members of the ADVENTURE project have visited SKKU to give a lecture every year.
